Tennessee Bonus Tax

Tennessee Bonus Tax Calculator 2026

Tennessee has no state income tax, so a bonus here loses only federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare. See your net bonus, what gets withheld, and how much of it may come back when you file.

Tennessee never taxed wages, and its Hall income tax on interest and dividends was repealed from 2021. No state tax is withheld from a bonus.

If you live here but work in a state with an income tax, that state can tax your bonus and your employer withholds its rate instead.

Is a Bonus Taxed Higher in Tennessee?

No. A bonus is ordinary wage income. It only looks heavily taxed because the employer withholds at flat rates instead of your personal rate. When you file your 2026 return, the bonus is added to your salary and taxed at the same federal brackets as the rest of your pay.

The federal 22% is a good fit for people in the 22% bracket. If your income keeps you in the 10% or 12% bracket, the flat rate over-withholds and the extra comes back as a refund. If the bonus pushes you into the 24%, 32% or higher bracket, 22% is too little and you will owe the difference in April. The calculator compares both numbers for your salary.

Social Security and Medicare work differently: they are a flat 7.65% on wages and are not settled at filing. The one exception is Social Security on wages above $184,500 in 2026. Once your salary plus bonus passes that cap, the 6.2% stops. If two employers both withheld it, you claim the excess back on your return.
