Maryland Capital Gains Tax

Maryland taxes capital gains as ordinary income at state rates up to 6.5%, and from 2025 adds 2% on net capital gain when federal AGI exceeds $350,000, for a top state rate of 8.5%. County income taxes of 2.25% to 3.30% apply on top and are not included here. This calculator applies the 6.5% top rate to the whole gain, so it overstates the tax for most filers. It approximates the 2% tax by charging it on the part of your income plus gain above $350,000, while Maryland charges it on the whole net long-term gain once federal AGI passes $350,000 and not on short-term gains.

Long-term: Taxed as ordinary income (up to 6.5%), +2% when federal AGI exceeds $350,000; county tax on top

Short-term: Taxed as ordinary income (up to 6.5%); county tax on top; the 2% capital gains tax does not apply

NIIT Applied

The 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax applies because your income exceeds $200,000.
