Montana Capital Gains Tax
Montana taxes net long-term capital gains at their own rates: 3.0% on the part of the gain that fits under $47,500 of taxable income single ($71,250 head of household, $95,000 joint), and 4.1% above that. Short-term gains are ordinary income, taxed at 4.7% and 5.65%. This calculator applies 4.1% to the whole long-term gain and 5.65% to short-term gains, so it overstates the tax for filers with lower income. From 2027 the ordinary top rate drops to 5.4% and the brackets widen; the capital gains rates stay the same.
Long-term: 3.0%, then 4.1% once taxable income passes $47,500 single / $71,250 head of household / $95,000 joint
Short-term: Taxed as ordinary income (4.7%, then 5.65%)
