How Florida assigns your filing frequency

Your frequency is based on how much sales tax you collect. Florida Department of Revenue notifies you of your assigned schedule.

Monthly

More than $1,000 in sales tax collected per year.

Quarterly

$501 – $1,000 per year (also the default for new businesses).

Semiannual

$101 – $500 per year.

Annual

$100 or less per year.

Florida sales tax filing rules

Good to know

Returns are due the 1st and LATE AFTER the 20th of the month following each period.

Good to know

Electronic payments must be INITIATED by 5:00 p.m. ET on the business day BEFORE the 20th (see Form DR-659). This is earlier than the 20th itself.

Good to know

Businesses that paid $5,000+ in sales tax in the prior state fiscal year must file and pay electronically.

Timely-filing discount

Collection allowance of 2.5% of the first $1,200 of tax due (max $30 per reporting period), for electronic filers only.

Filing Florida sales tax late

Florida charges a late-filing and late-payment penalty plus interest on any unpaid tax, and most states apply a minimum penalty even on a zero return. Filing late also forfeits the timely-filing discount described above. File on time — even a return with no tax due must be filed. Confirm current penalty amounts with the Florida Department of Revenue.
