How Texas assigns your filing frequency

Your frequency is based on how much sales tax you collect. Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts notifies you of your assigned schedule.

Annual

Less than $1,000 in state sales tax for the year (yearly return due Jan 20).

Quarterly

Smaller monthly liability; quarterly returns due Apr 20, Jul 20, Oct 20, Jan 20.

Monthly

Larger filers (assigned by the Comptroller); due the 20th of the following month.

Good to know

TEXNET payments over $1,000,000 must be initiated by 8:00 p.m. CT the banking day before the due date.

Prepayments

Optional prepayment for the extra 1.25% discount: monthly prepay due the 15th; quarterly prepay due the 15th of the second month of the quarter.

Timely-filing discount

0.5% timely-filing discount, plus an additional 1.25% discount if you prepay.

Filing Texas sales tax late

Texas charges a late-filing and late-payment penalty plus interest on any unpaid tax, and most states apply a minimum penalty even on a zero return. Filing late also forfeits the timely-filing discount described above. File on time — even a return with no tax due must be filed. Confirm current penalty amounts with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
