Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2022 NAICS Structure. Codes are public domain. A NAICS code classifies your business activity — it is not a license, tax ID, or EIN.
Type a keyword that describes your main product or service — like “bakery,” “consulting,” or “landscaping” — or enter a code prefix you already have.
Scan the results and pick the 6-digit code whose title best fits your primary source of income. The sector line shows where each code sits in the hierarchy.
Copy the code and drop it into your SS-4 EIN application, SAM.gov profile, license form, or loan paperwork.
Government forms and lenders use NAICS codes to classify your business. Here's where the number shows up most often.
The IRS asks for your principal business activity when you apply for an Employer Identification Number.
SAM.gov registration and set-aside eligibility are tied to your primary and secondary NAICS codes.
Many state and local business license applications require an industry classification code.
SBA loans, bank applications, and underwriting often map your business to a NAICS code for risk scoring.
Every official 2022 NAICS code — 20 sectors down to 1,012 six-digit national industries.
Match by industry keyword or by code prefix, with results that update as you type.
Each result shows the parent sector so you can see exactly where a code sits in the hierarchy.
Copy any code with a single click to paste straight into SS-4, SAM.gov, or a loan form.

Sector context and copy buttons are designed for getting the right code onto your EIN, SAM.gov, or loan paperwork without errors.
The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by U.S. federal statistical agencies to classify businesses by economic activity. It was developed jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico and replaced the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system in 1997. The U.S. Census Bureau maintains the U.S. edition and revises it every five years; the 2022 revision is the current one.
A NAICS code is hierarchical, and each added digit makes it more specific:
| Digits | Level | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Sector | 54 — Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services |
| 3 | Subsector | 541 — Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services |
| 4 | Industry Group | 5412 — Accounting, Tax Preparation, Bookkeeping, and Payroll Services |
| 5 | NAICS Industry | 54121 — Accounting, Tax Preparation, Bookkeeping, and Payroll Services |
| 6 | National Industry | 541211 — Offices of Certified Public Accountants |
Most filings want the full 6-digit code, which pins down a single national industry. Three of the 20 sectors are written as ranges because they cover several leading digits: 31-33 (Manufacturing), 44-45 (Retail Trade), and 48-49 (Transportation and Warehousing).
The guiding rule is primary revenue: choose the code that describes the activity generating the largest share of your sales. A coffee shop that also sells a few branded mugs is still a 722515 — Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars or 722513 — Limited-Service Restaurants business, not a retailer. If you genuinely run two separate lines of business, some systems (notably SAM.gov) let you record a primary code plus additional ones.
If you are filling out an IRS form, note that the IRS publishes its own list of principal business activity codes in the Schedule C and Form 1120 instructions. Those codes are drawn from NAICS, so the number you find here is the number the IRS expects — see our guide to the Schedule C business code for the line-by-line walkthrough.
These three are easy to confuse because they all classify industries with a number — but they serve different systems:
| System | Digits | Maintained by | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| NAICS | 2–6 | U.S. Census Bureau | EIN/SS-4, SAM.gov, licensing, economic statistics |
| SIC | 4 | Legacy (replaced 1997) | Older databases, some insurers and lenders |
| IRS business activity code | 6 | IRS (drawn from NAICS) | Schedule C, Form 1065, Form 1120 |
In practice, the IRS principal business activity code on Schedule C is the same 6-digit number as your NAICS code. Some banks, insurers, and data vendors still ask for the older SIC code; if you need to translate, see our SIC code lookup guide. And remember: a NAICS code is purely for classification — it is not an EIN, a license, or a tax registration on its own. For the bigger picture, read our complete NAICS codes guide.

NAICS codes are published by the U.S. Census Bureau and are in the public domain. This lookup uses the 2022 edition. A NAICS code classifies your business activity and is not legal or tax advice; confirm your code against the official Census manual before filing.
