How Hourly Take-Home Pay Is Calculated

  1. Gross pay. Hourly rate times regular hours, plus overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate and double-time hours at 2 times. A weekly total is converted to your pay period: twice the week for biweekly pay, 52 weeks spread over 24 or 12 paychecks for semimonthly and monthly pay.
  2. Pre-tax deductions. 401(k) contributions and pre-tax health premiums come off before federal and state income tax.
  3. Federal taxes. Income tax is estimated by annualizing the paycheck and applying the 2026 standard deduction and brackets. Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) are figured on gross pay.
  4. State taxes.State income tax uses the state's rate schedule, and employee payroll taxes such as disability insurance and paid family leave are added where the state has them. Local income taxes are noted but not calculated.
