Your hours and pay

Hours per week. If daily overtime applies to you, count those hours here even in a week under 40. Hours over 12 in a day, and over 8 on a seventh straight workday, go in double time.

Pre-tax deductions lower federal and state income tax. Social Security and Medicare are figured on gross pay.

California Overtime Rules

California pays daily overtime: 1.5x after 8 hours in a workday and after 40 hours in a workweek, and 2x after 12 hours in a workday.

  • 1.5x for hours over 8 and up to 12 in a workday, and for hours over 40 in a workweek.
  • 1.5x for the first 8 hours on the seventh consecutive day of work in a workweek.
  • 2x (double time) for hours over 12 in a workday and for hours over 8 on that seventh consecutive day.
  • Agricultural workers and some other job classes follow special overtime rules.

Overtime is taxed like the rest of your pay. A paycheck with extra hours can have more federal tax withheld because payroll annualizes it, and for 2025 through 2028 the federally required overtime premium is deductible on your federal return. The overtime tax calculator estimates that deduction; the paycheck above does not include it.

Taxes on an Hourly Paycheck in California

Federal. Income tax is withheld from each paycheck based on your filing status and the 2026 brackets. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 for the year. Medicare takes 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000 ($250,000 for joint filers).

State. California taxes wages at progressive rates up to 12.3%. The calculator uses the 2025 brackets because California has not yet published its 2026 schedule. Employee payroll taxes: CA SDI (includes paid family leave) at 1.3% of all wages.

Tips. Reported tips are wages for federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare and for California income tax. The tipped cash wage California employers may pay is on the California minimum wage page, and the tip tax calculator estimates the federal No Tax on Tips deduction.
