Is a Paid Square Plan Worth It?

The rate cuts on paid plans are real but small: Plus saves 0.1 percentage points in person (2.5% vs 2.6%) and 0.4 points online (2.9% vs 3.3%). Whether that covers the subscription depends entirely on your volume mix:

  • In-person only:Plus saves $1 per $1,000 processed, so you'd need about $49,000/month in card-present volume for the rate cut alone to cover the $49 fee.
  • Online / invoice heavy: Plus saves $4 per $1,000 of online card volume, so roughly $12,250/month breaks even — much more attainable for e-commerce and invoice-based businesses.
  • Feature value counts too: most businesses that upgrade do it for the POS features, reporting, and 24/7 support — the lower rates are a bonus, not the main event.

Use this calculator's monthly mode with your real volume and average ticket to compare plans side by side — the fixed 15¢/30¢ per-sale fees matter a lot when your average sale is small.

How to Lower Your Square Fees

  • Push invoices to ACH. At 1% with a $5 cap, ACH beats every card rate: a $2,000 invoice costs $5.00 by ACH vs $66.30 by card on the free plan.
  • Avoid keyed entry. Manually keyed payments cost 3.5% + 15¢ — nearly a full point above card-present. A reader pays for itself quickly.
  • Mind small tickets. The fixed fee dominates tiny sales: on a $5 in-person sale, 2.6% + 15¢ is an effective 5.6%. Consider minimum purchase amounts for cards.
  • Negotiate at scale. Square offers custom pricing for businesses processing over $250K per year.
  • Deduct everything.Processing fees, plan subscriptions, and hardware are all deductible business expenses — your 1099-K reports gross sales before Square's cut, so tracking fees directly lowers your taxable income.

Why Know Your Square Fees

Price products correctly

A coffee shop processing $20,000/month in-person pays about $580 in fees at a $10 average ticket. Build that into your menu prices from day one.

Choose the right plan

Monthly mode shows whether Plus or Premium's lower rates actually cover the subscription at your volume — or whether the free plan wins.

Route payments cheaply

The same $1,000 invoice costs $5 by ACH, $33.30 by card online (free plan), or $35.15 keyed. Knowing the spread changes how you ask to get paid.

Square Seller Taxes: What the 1099-K Means for You

For 2026, Square issues a federal Form 1099-K when your gross card payments exceed $20,000 AND 200 transactions — the threshold restored by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) in 2025. Several states set lower thresholds (some as low as $600), so you may receive one even below the federal line.

A 1099-K reports your grosssales — before processing fees, refunds, and chargebacks. Report income on Schedule C and deduct Square's fees, plan subscriptions, and hardware. Net profit is subject to income tax plus 15.3% self-employment tax, and you generally need to pay quarterly estimated taxes.
