Every FBA sale is hit by three fees. The referral feeis Amazon's commission — a percentage of the total sales price with a $0.30 minimum per item. The FBA fulfillment fee pays for pick, pack, and shipping, based on size tier and weight — and since April 17, 2026, it carries a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge. Monthly storage is billed per cubic foot and triples during Q4.

2026 non-peak fulfillment fee examples (non-apparel, items priced $10–$50, before the 3.5% surcharge): small standard 4–6 oz costs $3.45, large standard 12–16 oz costs $4.60, large standard 1.75–2 lb costs $5.82, and large bulky starts at $9.35 plus $0.38 per pound above the first. Products priced under $10 automatically receive Low-Price FBA rates, saving about $0.86 per unit on average.
With FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), you ship inventory to Amazon and pay fulfillment plus storage fees; with FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant), you store and ship every order yourself and pay only the referral fee to Amazon.
| Factor | FBA | FBM |
|---|---|---|
| Prime badge | Automatic | Only via Seller Fulfilled Prime (strict requirements) |
| Best for | Small, light, fast-turning products | Oversized, heavy, slow-moving, or fragile items |
| Shipping cost | $3.32–$7+ per unit, all-in | Your postage + boxes + labor |
| Storage risk | Q4 rates triple; aged-inventory surcharges | Your own space, no surprise fees |
| Returns | Amazon handles them | You handle them |
The practical test: compare this calculator's fulfillment fee + storage against your true cost to pick, pack, and ship one unit (postage, materials, and your time at a realistic hourly rate). For a 1-lb item, FBA's ~$4.60–$5.30 all-in is usually cheaper than self-fulfilling with $5–$8 postage alone. For a 40-lb item, FBA bulky fees plus oversize storage often lose to a negotiated carrier rate.
Monthly inventory storage (verified July 2026): January–September costs $0.75/cu ft for standard size and $0.48/cu ft for oversize; October–December jumps to $2.40/cu ft and $1.20/cu ft. Storage looks tiny per unit — until inventory stops moving.
A healthy FBA product typically keeps total Amazon fees (referral + fulfillment + storage) under 40% of the sale price, leaving room for product cost and a 25–35% net margin.
Amazon issues a federal Form 1099-K when your gross payments exceed $20,000 AND 200 transactions— the threshold restored by the OBBBA in 2025. Note that some states require a 1099-K at much lower thresholds, so check your state's rules.
The 1099-K shows grosssales — before referral fees, FBA fees, refunds, and advertising. Your taxable profit is what's left after deducting product costs, all Amazon fees, inbound shipping, software, and other business expenses on Schedule C. That net profit is subject to income tax plus 15.3% self-employment tax, and most sellers need to make quarterly estimated payments to avoid IRS penalties.
