Your deductions are working
$7,770 in deductions cut your taxable profit — saving you roughly $1,098 in tax versus deducting nothing.
Grubhub sends delivery partners Form 1099-NEC via the Grubhub for Drivers app and Driver Portal.
No form does not mean no taxes: all Grubhub income is taxable from the first dollar, and self-employment tax applies once net earnings reach $400.
Grubhub delivery partners are independent contractors. No taxes are withheld from your weekly deposits, so your Grubhub profit carries two taxes: 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of net profit (once net earnings hit $400) plus ordinary federal and state income tax. You file Schedule C for the business and Schedule SE for the self-employment tax, and you get to deduct half of the SE tax above the line.
Grubhub reports on Form 1099-NEC — not 1099-K — because it pays you directly for services. For payments made in 2026, the federal 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000 (the OBBBA raised it from the long-standing $600), so part-time drivers below that line may receive no form. The 1099-NEC total includes offer pay, mileage contributions, hourly minimums where they exist, and tips paid through the app. A quirk worth knowing: Grubhub's 'mileage contribution' is taxable income, not a reimbursement — your actual tax mileage deduction at the IRS rate is claimed separately and is usually far larger.
At the 2026 rate of 72.5 cents per mile, 10,000 delivery miles removes $7,250 from your taxable profit. Add insulated bags, the business share of your phone plan, and parking, and a $15,000 gross Grubhub year often shrinks to roughly half that in taxable profit.
Expect to owe $1,000 or more? The IRS requires quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040-ES, due April 15, June 15, and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. The penalty for skipping them works like interest on the shortfall — it applies even if you pay in full when you file in April.
Two reliable strategies: transfer the set-aside percentage from this calculator to a separate account every payday and remit quarterly, or — if you or your spouse has a W-2 job — increase that job's withholding to cover the Grubhub tax. Withholding counts as evenly paid through the year, making it the cleanest way to fix an underpayment discovered late in the year.
Every legitimate business expense reduces both self-employment tax and income tax. Not sure about an expense? Check if you can write it off.

Grubhub delivers 1099-NECs through the Grubhub for Drivers app and Driver Portal, and paper mail is slow. Opt into electronic delivery before January so your form is waiting for you — then check it against your own earnings records, since scheduled block pay, offers, and tips should all be included.
Grubhub's pay model mixes per-offer pay, mileage contributions, tips, and (in some markets) hourly minimums. It all lands in Box 1 of your 1099-NEC and it is all taxable — the 'mileage' portion of Grubhub pay is income, completely separate from your IRS mileage deduction, which you claim on top.
If you run Grubhub with DoorDash or Uber Eats, all of it is one delivery business on a single Schedule C. Pool the income, pool the miles — you do not need separate mileage logs per app, just one log that tags miles as business.
